First Muslim-Jewish Dialogue in New York

Despite resistance within their respective communities, Rabbi Schneier and Imam Omar Abu-Namous, spiritual leader of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, the largest mosque in New York City, hold a public dialogue at the New York synagogue followed a few days later by a joint address at the Islamic Cultural Center.

FFEU hosts the first-ever U.S. Summit of Imams and Rabbis with Imams and Rabbis from 11 cities around the United States.

March 9

Rabbi Schneier joins Dr. Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Peace Nobel Prize, to address the national dinner of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC).

April 4

Rabbi Schneier and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lead Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 40th anniversary commemoration at Memphis.

FFEU facilitates CNN Public service announcement and New York Times ad featuring six rabbis and six imams who denounce Islamophobia and antisemitism.

Rabbi Schneier is invited by HM King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to address the World Conference on Dialogue Among Religions (Madrid).

1st Weekend of Twinning (US and Canada)

The largest-ever organized linking up of mosques and synagogues in North America or anywhere else in the world: 50 twinning events between Muslim and Jewish institutions in 20 U.S. States and Canada, with the endorsement of the World Jewish Congress, Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim Public Affairs Council and the Canadian Associations of Jews and Muslims. Until the weekend of Twinning, many of our Muslim participants had never before been to a synagogue and many Jewish participants had never visited a mosque. Participants expressed their amazement at the similarities between the two traditions, by the sense of common themes, customs, and beliefs.

2008-2009

Rabbi Marc Schneier and Imam Shamsi Ali facilitate Muslim-Jewish dialogues across the U.S. They address community leaders and perform community service, including rebuilding a home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

May 21

with more than 100 mosques and 100 synagogues joining the program across the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and Netherlands.

January

Los Angeles-based Center for Muslim Jewish Engagement’s survey analysis of FFEU’s weekend of Twinning program shows overwhelming satisfaction with the program by Muslim and Jewish participants [100% of participants indicated they would be interested in participating in future twinning events].

January 14-17

FFEU partners with Rainbow Push and National Urban League for a series of events commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (NY).

January 21

Rabbi Schneier delivers keynote address at the Crown Forum, Morehouse College in Atlanta.

February 11-16

Rabbi Schneier and Martin Luther King III tour the United States to keynote events on Black-Jewish relations.

June 29

Rabbi Schneier is invited by the Government of Kazakhstan to present a keynote address on Islamophobia at the OSCE Permanent Council’s Plenary in Astana.

August 3

FFEU sponsors the first annual Muslim-Jewish conference in Vienna, an event that brings together 50 Muslim and Jewish students from Indonesia, Pakistan, Lebanon, Israel, and many countries across Europe.

October 19-21

Rabbi Schneier is invited by the government of Qatar to address the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue.

November 5-7

3rd annual Weekend of Twinning becomes a worldwide phenomenon as tens of thousands of Muslims and Jews in more than 120 synagogues and 120 mosques on four continents attend the twinning events.

December 6

FFEU convenes the Gathering of European Jewish and Muslim Leaders (Brussels).
