The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU) was created in 1989 to foster cooperation between members of different ethnic communities. Its Founder Rabbi Marc Schneier and the late Joseph Papp,  initially created the organization to dissolve the rising tensions between the African American and Jewish communities. The organization later became the international address for Muslim-Jewish relations and the national address for Black-Jewish relations. It continues to be committed to the belief that direct dialogue between ethnic communities is the most effective path towards reconciliation.

As of late, the organization is focused on combatting Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and religious bigotry. From its Season of Twinning and Muslim-Jewish solidarity committees throughout North America and Europe to its executive-level advocacy, the organization works to promote conversation, reconciliation and cooperation among Muslim and Jewish communities worldwide. It has held delegations and conferences of Muslim and Jewish leadership including the National Summit of Imams and Rabbis, three Muslim-Jewish Conferences in Europe, the Delegation of European Muslim and Jewish Leaders to New York and Washington D.C. and the Delegation of Latin American Muslim and Jewish Leaders to D.C. In June 2013, the FFEU hosted the Delegation of Muslim and Jewish Leaders from the Southern Hemisphere. In December 2015, FFEU co-sponsored a We Refuse To Be Enemies press conference at the European Parliament in Brussels with the participation of the newly appointed European Commission Coordinators on combating anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim hatred.

The FFEU’s President, Rabbi Schneier, is a trailblazer in the field of Muslim-Jewish relations. He was appointed to the Steering Committee of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s World Conference on Dialogue convened by King Abdullah. Schneier has also been appointed to the Executive Steering Committee of the Multi-Religious Campaign Against Anti-Muslim Bigotry in the United States. He has been received by countless governmental leaders and addressed a handful parliaments, including being one of the first rabbis to be received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah at their residences in Ramallah. He is a member of the advisory forum of the KAICIID (King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue).
